Arriving in Rome | Day 1 in Rome

Saturday 30 July 2016

At 06:00 am our alarms went off and shortly after my boyfriend and I jumped into our taxi heading towards Gatwick and our Easyjet flight to Rome. The flight went as smooth as it could and by 11:00 am I finally put my feet on Italian soil after years of dreaming.

My boyfriend and I opted to get picked up at the airport as opposed to bracing the underground. Nope it was not cheap, but then again I would have much rather spent a few more euros on an air conditioned taxi than getting hot and flustered working out the Italian train system!

After trawling various travel sites for affordable yet chic accommodation in Rome, I finally found this cute AirBnB which was located in the affluent Prati region about a 5/10 minute walk from the Vatican.

The apartment was small but had everything we needed for 3 nights in Rome and was incredibly affordable, so if you are interested I have attached the link to the place here!

When we arrived at our temporary roman home we freshened up by having showers and changing our clothes and then headed out in search of coca cola (mandatory holiday drink) and pizzas! We followed a map towards the centre of Rome and discovered we had a pretty spectacular walk from our apartment to the main centre, passing by St Peters Basilica, Castel St Angelo and crossing the Bridge of Angels!

After a bit of aimless wandering and photo taking we eventually decided on a restaurant in a small square (not far from the Piazza Navona) and wolfed down a delicious margarita pizza!

We then headed towards the Piazza Navona, which is the main square in Rome filled with romantic fountains, over-priced restaurants, plant laden buildings and lots of people!

From the Piazza Navona we walked on towards the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain which were both heaving with people and so we promised ourselves we would get up at the crack of dawn and visit these places at a quieter time!

From the Trevi we headed towards the Spanish Steps which were unfortunately under construction, and then after a little bit of window shopping we decided to head back to the apartment to freshen up and relax before dinner.

As we were so exhausted (an occurring theme throughout our Rome trip) we decided to try and find somewhere fairly close-by for dinner. After about 40 minutes of searching and some hangry bickering, we stumbled upon a small but delicious pasta restaurant and then headed back home for some well needed sleep.

Thank you for reading, the rest of my trip will be up in a few days!

Much love,

Lizzie xx
