The City To Ourselves | Day 3 in Rome

Saturday 6 August 2016

Our final morning in Rome was by far my favourite moment of our trip. As I said in my first travel diary, we promised ourselves we would wake up at the crack of dawn and visit the Trevi Fountain early in the morning before the unbelievable crowds form later in the day. So we did just that and managed to get down to the fountain before 8:30 am.

As we had expected the area was peaceful and a world away from the fountain we had experienced earlier on in the trip. With less people and of course less noise the fountain felt so much more special and it was lovely to simply sit and watch the water, as the sun rose higher in the sky, without a selfie stick in site!

After soaking up the delightful atmosphere of the Trevi, we headed on towards the Pantheon which was equally as divine early in the morning! I was so impressed with the Pantheon, the sheer age and scale of it literally takes your breath away (cheesy cheesy but true).  Inside is just as good as the outside, if not better, and it is completely free!

We then wandered through the beautiful side streets in the direction of the Castel St Angelo and ended up stopping at a little cafe called Casts and Bottega on Via de Coronari for cappuccinos, croissants and the most delicious fresh blood orange juice!

After our little coffee break, we then arrived at the Castel St Angelo, another one of my favourite land marks in Rome as I think it is super photogenic!

It is worth knowing that they do a half price entrance fee discount on people from Europe under the age of 25, making the entrance fee about 5 euros. We wandered around the castle, taking in minor bits of its history as we went along. However, one of our main reasons for visiting the castle was to see the view from the top which is well worth the entrance fee if you want a decent view of Rome!

The view from the top was priceless and is the perfect place to play spot the famous landmark, the only one neither of us managed to find was the Colosseum unfortunately!

Once we finished at the Castel we decided to walk along the river towards the Villa Borghese park. It took much longer than we had anticipated but the park was very pretty, albeit a bit confusing, but picteresque nonetheless! We did not have the energy to explore much more of the green space but managed to find this romantic little lake and sat and watched people struggling to row!

After our little excursion to the park we took the underground back to the Trevi area and ended up failing miserably at finding lunch. We attempted to find a restaurant that no longer existed, got a tad lost and hangry, but eventually found our feet again and stopped for roman sandwiches, beer and wine!

That evening we went to a locals pizzeria which was close to our apartment and it certainly did not disappoint! We then got onto the tube and headed towards the Trevi fountain to see it at night - really magical but still seriously busy! We then stopped at Giolitti, a highly recommended gelato place just up from the Pantheon which was incredible before heading home for our last sleep in Rome, for now..

Thank you so much for reading!

Much love,

Lizzie xx
